Charles Redfern was born in Haughton Green, Lancashire in 1848, the son of
Joseph Redfern and
Ann Maddox. By 1877 he had moved to Wath-upon-Dearne, where
he initially worked as a coal miner. In that year he married
Martha Elliss, with whom he had at least eleven children.
By the time his daughter Ellen Ann married in 1907, Charles had worked his way up in the
world to become a cab proprieter with a family firm based at the West End Livery Stables,
Wath-upon-Dearne. He died in 1925, leaving an estate of £440 19s 9d.
The photograph shows Charles with his wife Martha.
