Francis Bayes Lightley was born in Bridlington Quay in 1862, the son of Thomas Lightley and Elizabeth Robson Bayes. In 1881 he was living with his parents in Bridlington, and was apprenticed to a joiner. In 1887 he married Catherine Hannah Ratcliff in Bridlington, by which time he recorded his occupation as a cabinet maker. He is listed as a joiner in Bulmer's directory of 1892 for Bridlington.
