A local newspaper report of 1868 gives details of Mary's death:

DEATH BY BURNING - On Monday an inquest was held at the Forester's Arms, before J. M. Jennings, coroner, on the body of Mary Lightley, aged 94, housekeeper to Timothy Loft, waterman. On Saturday afternoon the deceased was found lying in the ash-grate with her clothes on fire. The flames were extinguished by a neighbour, and Dr. Stephenson called in. He attended her till Sunday afternoon, when she died, her death being caued by the injuries she had received. She had been subject to fits. No one but herself was in the house at the time of the occurrence. - Verdict, "Accidental death."
