William was born in Barnsley around 1828, the son of George Mallender and Sarah Huttley. (The surname appears variously as Mallender or Mallinder in different records.) By 1851 William was living with his parents in Worksop, and in December of that year he married Ann Hallam. William and Ann were still living in Worksop at the time their daughter Sarah Ann was born, but by 1881 they had moved to Yorkshire. William worked as an iron moulder.
