Arnold Lightley was born in Wath-upon-Dearne in 1915, the son of Francis Lightley and Ellen Ann Redfern. He attended Park Road School in Wath and a report of 1924 describes him as a "brilliant boy"; he came second in a class of 57, despite being absent 140 times out of 278 in that term! In July 1940 he married Edith Alice Rawlinson, also from Wath. By the time their only child Anne was born, they were living in Bradford, and they later lived in Keighley and Shipley before returning to Wath in 1967. Arnold initially worked as a general fitter in an engineering works, and later as a clerical assistant. He played the trumpet when young, and later on the violin. He also enjoyed gardening and bird-watching in his later years.
