Edith Alice Rawlinson was born in Wath-upon-Dearne in 1919, the daughter of Walter Rawlinson and Edith Alice Guest. As a girl she was a keen swimmer and won a number of trophies. She worked as a hairdresser and in July 1940 married Arnold Lightley, also from Wath. By the time their only child Anne was born, they were living in Bradford, and they later lived in Keighley and Shipley before returning to Wath in 1967. In her later years Edith enjoyed handicrafts such as knitting, tatting and lace-making.
