Betsey Helen White was born in Wroot, Lincolnshire in about 1854, the daughter of
Isaac Robert White and
Elizabeth Bailiff. In August 1880 she married
Stephen Mercer Lightley in Barnsley
and by the following
year they had settled in the Wath-upon-Dearne area of Yorkshire, where Stephen worked
as a colliery carpenter. They had at least nine children and also brought up their
nephew Richard as their own son. Betsey died
in 1932.
