Matthew Heeley was born about 1836 in Thorpe Common, Kimberworth, the son of Isaac Heeley and Ann Grafton. He married Ann Greaves in Masborough Chapel, Rotherham in 1865. In 1871 they were living in Thorpe Common, with their children Henry, Emily (probably Emma?) and Annie. Also listed is a Rhoda Ann Heeley, 10, who was actually probably Ann's illegitimate daughter, born five years before she married Matthew. In 1881 Matthew and Ann were living in Kimberworth. Matthew worked as a coal miner.
